Workshops Held on the Akhaltsikhe General Plan Concept

As part of the preparation of the Akhaltsikhe General Plan, a two-day programme comprising a site visit and a Planning Lab was held on 7–8 July to support the development of the Spatial Development Concept. The programme aimed to refine the Concept by incorporating local knowledge, technical expertise, and stakeholder input.

On the first day, the consulting team visited the historic districts of Rabati and Nardi, surveyed the city’s historic urban fabric, and assessed key transport nodes within the main tourism area. The day concluded with a working meeting with Akhaltsikhe historian Revaz Andghuladze, during which participants discussed the city’s historical evolution, the significance of its cultural heritage, and the key considerations that should inform the preparation of the Spatial Development Concept.

On 8 July, a Planning Lab was held at the Akhaltsikhe Sports Complex, bringing together representatives of the municipality, architectural professionals, and the private sector. Participants discussed the city’s principal development challenges and the guiding principles of spatial development, while working in groups to explore alternative approaches to functional zoning. The workshop also introduced tactical urbanism as a planning approach and examined opportunities to implement small-scale spatial interventions to improve the urban environment.

The outcomes of the site visit and Planning Lab will contribute to the finalization of the Spatial Development Concept and support the identification of long-term spatial development priorities for the Akhaltsikhe General Plan.
